ABCs and 123s – Prioritizing Community Assets over Needs

Speakers:

Assets are the primary building blocks of sustainable community development, but oftentimes, we focus on the deficiencies and needs of people and communities rather than the assets and capacities.  Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is an approach for building sustainable community-driven development.  The premise is that communities drive development processes themselves by identifying and mobilizing existing, but often unrecognized and untapped assets.  ABCD builds on existing assets found in the community and mobilizes individuals, associations, and institutions to create positive neighborhood and social change.

  • Learn the principles of Asset-based Community Development (ABCD)
  • Gain an understanding of the key tools utilized in the ABCD model
  • Identify opportunities of ABCD application through case studies of residents in urban neighborhoods
