You’ll hear insights from the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship’s research on “The State of Corporate Citizenship 2017,” a unique research report that reveals what’s top of mind with executives and why the current global environment supports corporate citizenship efforts now more than ever before.

Stewart Rassier will share highlights from the report including:

  • Corporate citizenship helps companies successfully achieve strategic goals, particularly when they invest in programs for at least four years.
  • Companies are almost twice as likely to report success enhancing corporate reputation and reducing employee turnover when they integrate corporate citizenship objectives into overall business strategy.
  • Programs to increase diversity and inclusion, and reporting on social and environmental performance are among the topics that have increased most in importance to executive respondents.
  • Nearly 50% of executives reported that the Paris Agreement led to increased efforts to cut GHG emissions.

This complimentary event is a great opportunity to learn where your company stands in today’s environment, and to discuss how you can achieve even more with your most strategic corporate citizenship programs.

millennium park tour

Date:

Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Special Schedule for This Event:

8:00am – 8:45am – Networking and Presentation at The Chicago Cultural Center
8:45am – 9:45am – Millennium Park Tour

Topic:

Wear Your Walking Shoes!

Did you know that Millennium Park, recipient of the 2009 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence, was once an industrial wasteland? In fact, from the 1850s until 1997, the land that is now occupied by Millennium Park was controlled by the Illinois Central Railroad.  The area, which was covered with unsightly railroad tracks and parking lots, remained a blight on Chicago’s lakefront throughout the 20th century. That blight was replaced in July 2004 by a world-class public park that is among the top 10 tourist destinations in the U.S. Today, the 24.5-acre Millennium Park represents an unprecedented public-private partnership and has become a thoroughly modern achievement for Chicago in the tradition of its original founders.
Our morning will begin at the Chicago Cultural Center, a stunning landmark building, in the Millennium Park Room on the 5th floor, where Jamey Lundblad, Chief Marketing Officer, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and Matt Nielson, Deputy Commissioner for Facilities, DCASE, will discuss the Park and the challenges and successes in the process of developing that remarkable public-private partnership. Then, Matt will take us across the street to guide us in exploring the many unique aspects of Millennium Park, including a visit to Lurie Garden with Laura Ekasetya, Director of Lurie Garden.

Marc Kielburger, Co-Founder, WE Charity and ME to WE

In the age where selfies and the “me,” not “we,” mentality seems more prevalent than ever, how do we get kids to think it’s cool to care?

Leading social activist, New York Times best-selling author, and co-founder of WE Charity and ME to WE, Marc Kielburger has a lifetime of experience working to inspire and empower youth across the globe. WE Charity is a high-impact, accountable and innovative charity, and Marc will share an insider’s perspective on empowering today’s youth and on becoming the largest charity on Facebook. He will also show us how the ripple effect of positive content on social media really works and how we can use our time and resources to make the greatest impact both locally and globally.

One of the key components of WE Charity is WE Schools. More than one million youth in 3,500 schools across the U.S. are participating in that phenomenally successful program. We’re going to hear how WE Schools’ comprehensive and resource-rich learning framework is transforming classrooms through experiential service-learning. Through WE Schools, students learn skills in leadership, communication and project management, which results in three key outcomes: increased academic engagement, improved university and workplace readiness, and a commitment to active citizenship.

WE may well have the key that develops future leaders and citizens who know it’s cool to care!

Project ROI: Defining the Financial and Wider Business ROI from Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Join us for a presentation by Steve Rochlin, lead author of “Project ROI” and co-CEO of IO Sustainability. Forbes Magazine has described Project ROI as “a Godsend.”

For too long a debate has raged – should companies invest in corporate responsibility (CR) and sustainability initiatives and if so, how much? Does CR detract or enhance the bottom line? Project ROI finds that CR has the potential to deliver an attractive business case. The question is not whether to engage in CR programs, but how. Project ROI establishes the potential returns on investment CR can deliver. But it’s not enough to do CR, one must do it well. Project ROI defines a clear roadmap of essential practices for companies that want to improve the impact and value of their CR and sustainability performance.

Based on 20 years of experience in healthcare and government relations, Rob Christie puts the pieces in context and offers his take on this complex subject. Rob spoke to us during the 2008 election about the then upcoming changes in healthcare and eight years later, much has changed and will definitely continue to change. Fans who tuned into the 2015 Super Bowl probably think twice before using the phrase “like a girl” to negatively describe someone’s ability.

More people are helping women be #FreeToWalk away from financial abuses after learning the story behind “the world’s largest prison break.”

These campaigns for P&G Always and Allstate Foundation Purple Purse supported their corporate social responsibility efforts, helping them to stand out, address a social problem, and build goodwill among consumers and others. And, both were led by Leo Burnett/MSLGROUP Chicago.

Join us on Tues., Nov. 15, as Amy Cheronis and Lynsey Elve of MSLGROUP Chicago share insights on how to take an attention-getting approach to corporate social responsibility that breaks through the noise to get people talking and taking action. During the discussion, Amy and Lynsey will share a variety of best practice case studies – including the stories behind P&G Always #LikeAGirl and Allstate Foundation Purple Purse #FreeToWalk.

Earlier this year, MSLGROUP in Chicago and Leo Burnett’s Reputation & Communications Practice joined forces to create one integrated public relations offering housed under the MSLGROUP brand – and based in the Leo Burnett Building.

Your Voice Matters – On The Table 2016

When we come together as a community to listen to and learn from each other, we have the power to impact both neighborhoods and lives. That’s what On the Table is all about.

For the past two years, On the Table has proven that Chicago-area residents and thought-leaders such as you share a desire to come together, collaborate more, become more civically involved and more committed to our community. While we know that there’s no “quick fix” to the issues facing our region, progress will result from thought-leaders, residents, and organizations working to make contributions that add up to a greater solution that helps unite the place we call home. On the Table is the channel for conversations to take place, so join us as we once again join The Chicago Community Trust and hundreds of Chicagoans in one day of conversation.

Please Note: The format for this meeting will not include the usual half-hour networking.  The meeting will start shortly after 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 9:30 a.m.

Program:

How Do We Know if It Works?

Dana Weiner, Ph.D., will present on program evaluation. Accountability and systems change both depend on effective measurement: of processes, outcomes, and the system drivers that facilitate or impede success.  In a social service context, understanding whether our investments are “paying off” requires that we think and plan from the outset for program evaluation that identifies key outcomes and metrics, clearly articulates Theories of Change, detects unintended consequences, and sets the stage for replicability, sustainability, and an in-depth understanding of why some strategies are effective and others are not.

Speaker:

MarySue Barrett: President, Metropolitan Planning Council

Program:

Metropolitan Planning Council President MarySue Barrett demystifies what’s really going on with growth in our city and region.

Is it inevitable that Houston will overtake Chicago as the #3 U.S. metropolitan region? Or that Nashville continues to add as many people in one day as Chicago does all year? We can’t blame the weather for our slow growth, since Minneapolis is 1/3 our size, but is growing at five times our rate. Our sluggish economy plays out in the context of deepening poverty in too many areas, affecting prospects for both companies and individuals.

Chicagoland has many enviable assets, but we have failed to link them together in a way that unlocks our potential. Our December 3rd CR Group meeting will arm you with new, compelling data about how we compare to other cities and regions and how to get back on the path of growth. Learn about the value of investing in our transportation network, about attracting new development near transit stations, and about streamlining Illinois’ proliferation of governments – and how you can help Grow Chicago.

8:30am – 9:30am   Program

Speaker:

Jason Saul, Founder and CEO, Mission Measurement, LLC

Program:

Join us at our September Breakfast Meeting for a discussion with Jason Saul on measuring the core business benefits of the Social Value Proposition.

Jason Saul is one of the nation’s leading experts on measuring social impact. He is the Founder and CEO of Mission Measurement LLC, a strategy consulting firm that helps corporations, nonprofits and public sector clients measure and improve their social impact.

Jason introduces the concept of a “social value proposition,” motivates it with thoughtful consumer insights and walks us through the kinds of value it can deliver. In the process, he underlines the distinction between socially conscious consumers and consumers who respond to “social value drivers.”

He argues the business logic of CSR and corporate sustainability is fundamentally changing. In a framework splitting business value into extrinsic and intrinsic – where intrinsic benefits affect actual consumption, while extrinsic ones do not – Jason argues companies have been erring too much on the side of extrinsic.
