Brian P. Starr – Director, Inspired Engagement, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago

 

Brian is the Director, Inspired Engagement at YWCA Metropolitan Chicago. In his role, he has led efforts to create and grow sustainable individual and corporate partnerships. Starr has implemented cultivation strategies leading to long term sustainable donor engagement and corporate partnerships. He employs outstanding customer service focused on creating meaningful donor and volunteer experiences. Starr is skilled at aligning donor philanthropic objectives to organizational priorities. His responsibilities included strategic planning, goal setting, and volunteer management, as well as crafting the tactical plan to generate revenue

Prior to joining YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, Starr led development efforts at United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and the American Lung Association. During his tenure, Starr created and executed the development plan which significantly increased donor engagement and organizational revenue.

Starr currently volunteers as a docent for the Glessner House and Clark House Museums.   His outside interests include Chicago history, architecture and cycling. A native of Chicago, Starr currently resides in the historic Hyde Park/Kenwood community. He attended University of Illinois at Chicago majoring in business.

Laura leads Good Starts Young – The Allstate Foundation’s Youth Empowerment signature program. This work integrates strategic philanthropy and corporate responsibility, which includes corporate volunteerism, cultural and civic initiatives. Support for programs and nonprofit partners focus on service-learning where youth develop social emotional learning skills – intrapersonal, interpersonal and cognitive competence – for life success.

Prior to this work, Laura developed and led Community Engagement activating Allstate’s agency owners and employees in service where they live and work around the world. The corporate volunteer platform includes an Officer Nonprofit Board Placement Program, Allstate Fellows – a skills-based initiative, agency owner and employee community service, 110 local Helping Hands committees, and an enterprise-wide volunteer and giving event – Allstate Bring Out The Good Month

Committed to building brand and enhancing organizational reputation through strategic philanthropy, effective communications, stakeholder engagement, and community-facing activities, Laura is an inclusive, collaborative and mission-driven leader. She’s also a successful strategist who translates vision into innovative, results-oriented corporate responsibility programs.

Laura has served on various non-profit boards throughout her career. She is past president of the Corporate Responsibility Group of Greater Chicago and a member of the Community Involvement Roundtable at the Carroll School of Management Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College.

Before joining Allstate Laura served as a development executive at YMCA of Metro Chicago and Lyric Opera of Chicago, and led the corporate volunteer program and Kraft Employee Fund at Kraft Foods. She earned her bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Louisville and holds a certificate in corporate community involvement from the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship.

Sean Moloney – Director

Senior Corporate Relations Specialist, Partnerships & Events, Exelon

 

Passionate about corporate responsibility, Sean strengthens the Exelon community by acting as a change agent and understands that successful CSR programming must align with business goals and purpose.  He is a liaison between Exelon, its employees, and nonprofit partners and drives employee engagement by managing major volunteer initiatives across Exelon and its operating companies.  He currently sits on the board of two of Exelon’s Employee Resource Groups, the Developing Young Professionals, promoting service and professional development opportunities; and the ECO Team, where he serves as Director of Events Planning.  He also serves on the Auxiliary Board at the Shedd Aquarium.  Prior to Exelon, Sean worked for two Chicago-based environmental nonprofits, Friends of the Chicago River and Openlands.  He earned a Master’s degree in Conservation from James Cook University and a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from DePaul University.

Claudia Freed – Past President

President and CEO, EALgreen

 

Claudia is President & CEO of EALgreen, a nonprofit organization that converts surplus business inventory into college scholarships for students with financial need.  EALgreen believes in a global community in which all individuals can improve their lives through education. Whether to improve the management of excess inventory in the supply chain or to fulfill corporate responsibility goals, businesses and higher education partners benefit from EALgreen’s circular economy model and create constructive, lasting change.  For society, EAL empowers individuals to achieve their potential through education; For the environment, it reduces waste and extends the useful life of manufactured products; For the economy, EALgreen improves business efficiencies adding value to the bottom line.

Claudia, born and raised in Argentina, was the first student ever to receive an EAL Scholarship in 1982. She attended North Park University with the support of a scholarship generated from a donation by W.W. Grainger.  Both institutions remain active partners of EALgreen today. More than 16,600 students have received scholarships valued at more than $20 million as hundreds of thousands of pounds of surplus materials have been repurposed or recycled by the organization.

Claudia’s background is in corporate finance, business development, and fundraising.  Her experience includes leading pro-bono consulting teams under Mayor Richard M. Daley’s administration, managing corporate and institutional relationships for a privately-held investment company specializing in options trading and developing strategic partnerships in higher education and corporate philanthropy.  She served three terms as a Board Member of Chicago Public Media (WBEZ) and is a Trustee for Robert Morris University.  Claudia is a recipient of Crain’s 40 Under 40 (Class 1995).  Claudia is honored to be the CR Group’s first Latina President.

Eric Wilkerson – Director

Senior Director, Institutional Giving, John G. Shedd Aquarium 

 

Eric brings more than 12 years of experience in leading fundraising, advocacy, political and social movement campaigns on behalf of human rights and environmental causes. Joining Shedd Aquarium in 2018 as Senior Director of Institutional Giving, Eric leads strategic initiatives dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission to spark compassion, curiosity and conservation for the aquatic animal world through corporate partnerships, government and foundation relations and cause marketing efforts. Today, Eric serves as a national Board member for Victory Institute, as a co-chair for the Emerging Leaders Circle at Equality Illinois and is actively involved in statewide and local political campaigns and social justice initiatives.

Kate Cohler – President-Elect

profilepicKate works within the Corporate Communications team at Morningstar, Inc.  As Director of Community Relations, she manages the firm’s various partnerships with nonprofit organizations and acts as resource on volunteerism for Morningstar’s offices, internationally.  In the Chicago headquarters, she coordinates volunteer opportunities focusing on education and financial literacy. Kate joined Morningstar in 2011, after working as Director of Development at the Chicago Math and Science Academy.  Kate began her career as a Chicago Public School teacher.  She has a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Ohio University.  Kate enjoys spending time on Lake Michigan, with her husband, Ryan and two sons, Cameron and Oliver.

Kristin Lewis – Director

Kristin works to advance the position of the company as a responsible corporate citizen by supporting core community relations initiatives nationwide. In this role, Kristin executes the company’s $1 million national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the localized implementation with associates at 67 Clubs in 21 markets. She also supports leadership non-profit board appointments, large scale volunteerism, in-kind donations and the company’s associate matching program. Kristin provides creative support and strategic direction in developing communications to tout the company’s commitment to community via presentations, social media, uscellular.com and internal communications. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio she graduated from Loyola University of Chicago and now lives in Logan Square with her husband and rescue dog.

Ann E. Murray – Past President 2009-2010

Philanthropy Director, Northwestern Medicine

 

Murray Ann (2)Ann is Philanthropy Director for Northwestern Memorial Foundation of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she has been for 17 years. Ann served as the Director of Development for the Block Museum of Art and the Medill School of Journalism, both at Northwestern University, and Alumni and Development Director for The John Marshall Law School. Ann earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and graduate degree from Indiana University. She has served in leadership roles for and continues to be involved with the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and Fourth Presbyterian Church.

 

George Nelson – Director

George Nelson has a background in marketing, communications, fundraising, business development and creative writing. He first became involved with the Corporate Responsibility Group in 2005 while an Associate Director of Corporate Relations at Northwestern University. He joined the board of CRG in 2009. George Nelson has worked with start-up companies, consulting on sales, communication and marketing positioning. Prior, he worked as a Proposal Manager with Anexsys (an e-Government solution provider, formerly a joint venture with JP Morgan Chase and U.S. Bank), and also in the business publishing field and printing and graphic arts sector, in business development and marketing roles. He earned his BA from Kenyon College in English Literature and a Masters of Science in Communication from Northwestern University (where he has served on the MSC steering committee). He is also involved with the Evanston Tennis Association, Chicago Dramatists Theatre and a soccer league.

Amy Newkirk – Past President 2012-2013

Amy_Newkirk_Formal_Photo_04252013Amy leads the firm’s community initiatives in Chicago, Milwaukee, Peoria and Des Moines.  In this role, Amy works to build PwC’s community brand in the marketplace by managing the firm’s charitable contributions, board placement of partners and staff, event sponsorships, holiday giving, volunteerism, and local corporate responsibility efforts.  Prior to this role, Amy served as Community Investment Manager at United Way or Greater St. Louis and as Fundraising Manager at United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.  Amy earned her bachelor of social work from Arizona State University and master of social work, with a concentration in nonprofit management, from Washington University of St. Louis.  Amy is a native of Grand Haven, Michigan and resides with her husband in Frankfort, Illinois.

Betsy Nicketakis – Director

Betsy Nicketakis serves as the Associate Director of Marketing and Enrollment Management for GEMS World Academy Chicago.  Prior to joining GEMS, she worked at Presence Health focusing on creating and cultivating partnerships with local organizations to increase brand awareness and market share.  Earlier in her career, she worked on Walgreen Co.’s community affairs team, managing grant fulfillment and activation, employee engagement and disaster relief aid.  Her career began at Lincoln Park Zoo managing corporate alliances where her passion for relationship management began. Betsy earned her Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration from Western Illinois University and holds a Certificate in Meeting, Convention and Exposition Management from Roosevelt University.

 

Beth Spurgeon – Director

Executive Director, ArcelorMittal USA Foundation at ArcelorMittal

 

Beth serves as the division manager of corporate responsibility and the executive director of the USA Foundation at ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company. She spearheads sustainability and corporate citizenship initiatives specific to the company’s operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This includes driving forward the implementation of ArcelorMittal’s 10 sustainable development outcomes.

Beth leads ArcelorMittal’s U.S. community investment initiatives, including national and local nonprofit partnerships in the company’s focus areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, environment, and health and safety. She also manages national sustainability reporting, stakeholder engagement, and employee engagement initiatives across ArcelorMittal’s 26 facilities in the U.S. which employ more than 18,000 people.

Prior to joining ArcelorMittal in 2014, Beth spent nine years in the nonprofit sector, occupying positions at the national headquarters of the YMCA (YMCA of the USA), the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center and Housing Opportunities for Women. She earned her M.A. in Social Science from The University of Chicago.

Jeffrey C. Walter – Director

Senior Public Affairs Specialist, Health Care Service Corporation

Jeffrey WalterJeffrey is passionate about addressing the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems through collaboration between the corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors. In his current role as Senior Public Affairs Specialist for Health Care Service Corporation, he oversees company-wide volunteer engagement strategy and execution for 23,000 employees across five states. This includes supporting all corporate community involvement initiatives, including corporate gifts, volunteerism, environmental sustainability, sponsorships, reporting, and internal communications.

Jeffrey has contributed to a robust portfolio of social-environmental initiatives at the local, state, national, and international levels. He has managed over 100 community sustainability leadership projects while working at the City of Chicago Department of Environment; coordinated training events reaching 3,000 international participants; and managed a $4 million public sector grant portfolio that has leveraged $12 million in local community investment.

Outside of work, Jeffrey loves teaching yoga in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. He has travelled to more than 17 countries (most recently to Cuba) with little more than a backpack and his trusted copy of The Lonely Planet guide.

Libby Lai-Bun Chiu – Past President 2011-2012

Libby Lai-Bun Chiu, Chief of Staff, Illinois Arts Council

Libby is the Chief of Staff at the Illinois Arts Council, where she also manages the Arts and Foreign Language program, and is advisor to the Education Leaders Institute, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts.  Libby is an adjunct professor at Goucher College where she teaches Arts Education and International Arts Policy.  Libby’s past service includes senior leadership positions at Urban Gateways Center for Arts Education, Harris Theater Chicago, The Boston Conservatory, Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities and Boston Public Schools.  In addition to the CR Group, she is active in community service at Asian American and Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and is on the Board of Overseers of The Boston Conservatory.

Kirk A. Hoopingarner – Past President 2010-2011

Kirk Hoopingarner is a partner in Quarles & Brady LLP’s Trusts and Estates and Tax-Exempt Organizations.  He has been practicing in these areas since coming to Chicago from The University of Michigan Law School in 1984. Kirk is married with four daughters and currently resides in Evanston, where he has played leadership roles in various community organizations, including previously serving as board chair of the Evanston Community Foundation, and currently serving on the board and executive committee of the McGaw YMCA of Evanston. He is also currently active as an Associate member of the Donors Forum and is a member of professional advisors committees for Children’s Memorial Hospital Foundation, Chicago Zoological Society and Lincoln Park Zoo.

Susan Geller – Director

Susan Geller has been a CR Group member for more than 15 years.  She is the Institutional Relations Officer with YWCA Metropolitan Chicago and the primary grant writer for their sexual violence programs. Susan has been with the YWCA since 2002 and previously held senior fundraising positions in Chicago with Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Loyola University Chicago, Chicago Boys and Girls Clubs and The Salvation Army. Susan holds a degree in social work from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Brett Lavery – Director

Community Involvement Deloitte Services, LP

Brett Lavery currently works for Deloitte supporting the Community Involvement activities for the Midwest region. In this role, she serves as the liaison between Deloitte and the local nonprofit community identifying opportunities to leverage Deloitte practitioners’ intellectual capital in a manner that strengthens the community and business. She also assists in efforts to use community involvement as a tool to enhance workforce development, talent, teaming, recruitment and retention. Prior to this, Brett was aligned with Deloitte’s Human Capital Consulting practice where she worked with clients around learning and development as well as change management concerns.

Patty Huber Morrissey – Director

Patty Huber Morrissey, Head of Social Innovation at Groupon, leads the philanthropic arm at Groupon since joining the company in May 2010. Harnessing the collective action platform, Patty developed the Groupon Grassroots initiative to turn deal seekers into do-gooders by tapping into the collective power of the group to respond to local community need. In addition to her work with Grassroots, Patty was appointed Chair of the Outreach Committee for the Illinois Governor’s Task Force on Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise, as well as joining the advisory team for Impact Engine, a 12-week accelerator program that supports for-profit businesses making the world a better place. Patty has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from James Madison University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. Her hobbies include braving the elements during her year-round bike commute to work and spending time with her husband Brian and daughter Vivian Rose.

Kate M. Stobbe – Director

Kate Stobbe currently serves as Corporate Responsibility Manager-US for ArcelorMittal.  Prior to ArcelorMittal, Kate worked for two and a half years as a Community Affairs Representative with Northern Trust and managed corporate philanthropy locally, nationally, and internationally.  After completing a graduate certificate in Non-Profit Management and the Philanthropy Sector from Loyola University, Kate held an internship at Kraft Foods in their Corporate Community Involvement department. Before crossing over to the corporate responsibility side, Kate held various positions with several non-profit organizations in Chicago and her home state of Oregon.  In addition to her certificate, Kate received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Luther College in Iowa.
